God, break my heart for the poor

Every Thursday, I want to wake up and ask, “God, give me a vision today to see and fight against injustice.” There is nothing special about Thursdays. More injustice doesn’t happen on Thursday than Monday, but I found for my life, giving a full day to focus on God’s vision and heartbeat overflows into the way I see things the rest of the week. I had the privilege to join several pastors on the northside of Chicago in prayer. We specifically pleaded for God to hear our cry in regards to the shootings and violence that is rising in Chicago. We poured our heart out to God. We were broken. The needs in the city are so great and overwhelming, many ignore them. I get it though – we can’t fix the problems of Chicago. We can’t stop the violence in and of ourselves. However, we can each shape the life of one person.

If you aren’t sure what God cares about, read the Bible and see what re-occuring themes come up. His glory is an obvious one. But over and over again the Scriptures paint our Father’s benevolent heart bent toward humanity when it is weak and lacking. The poor, widows, orphans, and foreigners are should be so dear to our heart like our Daddy’s heart. Isaiah the prophet says that they are our own flesh and blood (Isaiah 58:6-9).

Here is a short sampling of God’s heart for the poor.

Exodus 22:21
“You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.”

“Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. If you do and they cry out to me. I will certainly hear their cry.”

“When this offering is given to the Lord to purify your lives, making you right with him, the rich must not give more than the specified amount, and the poor must not give less.”

Leviticus 19:10
“It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”

“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”

“Have I refused to help the poor, or crushed the hopes of widows? Have I been stingy with my food and refused to share it with orphans? No, from childhood I have cared for orphans like a father, and all my life I have cared for widows. Whenever I saw the homeless without clothes and the needy with nothing to wear, did they not praise me for providing wool clothing to keep them warm? If I raised my hand against an orphan, knowing the judges would take my side, then let my shoulder be wrenched out of place! Let my arm be torn from its socket! That would be better than facing God’s judgment. For if the majesty of God opposes me, what hope is there?”
